Zendo Protocol

Entering

  • Enter the meditation area (zendo) through the left side of the door with a bow at the door. Walk in a clockwise direction to your seat (cushion or chair).
  • When you are at your seat, bow toward it, then turn clockwise until you face the center of the room and bow again. Then take your seat.

Leaving

  • After meditation, brush off your cushions and fluff up the zafu (round sitting cushion).
  • When preparing to leave the meditation area, repeat the Enter bowing process (bowing first to your seat, turning clockwise and bowing to the room).
  • Leave the zendo through the right side of the door, and bow at the door as you leave.

Bells

A bell is used to signal the beginning and end of meditation. The bell rings 3 times at start of a meditation session and once at the end. When the bell signals a move to another meditation activity, like walking meditation, it will ring 2 times to start that activity.
